Scott's Course Success

A lucky teenage golf course worker scored a hole in one when he took up a different type of course and won himself an iPod.

Scott Howard from Rowley Regis, is a green keeper at Dudley Golf Club, off Turners Hill, in Rowley Regis.

He joined a Black Country Connexions-backed LA-Life scheme when he was 17. He worked in the club's shop and was recently got promoted to the green keeper job he always wanted.

Scott, who gained his new post in July, is studying an Apprenticeship in Sports Turf at Rodbaston College, near Penkridge, in Staffordshire.

Thanks to his keen efforts on the Learning Agreement, called LA Life, he netted a coveted music player.

Run by Connexions Black Country and the Learning and Skills Council, LA-Life provides funded learning opportunities and specialist support to 16 and 17-year-olds who are in work but not receiving any kind of training.

Scott said: "LA-Life has made me look at things differently and opened up opportunities for me like, going to college. I wouldn't have gone to college as quick as I have without this scheme, I would probably put it off until next year. LA-Life is good as I get lots of support. I would encourage any young person to check out the website or call the LA-Life team to see how they can help them."

Paul Underhill, Scott's manager and Dudley Golf Course manager, added: "LA-Life takes the hassle away from the company sorting out training. It's helping Scott to get his qualification and anything that's going to help Scott achieve something is good. The scheme is very well run as you are kept informed as an employer and we get regular visits. It's a good way of helping Scott make his way in life and get his career on track, that's got to be a good thing."

If you are a 16 or 17-year-old in a job without any training call 0800 633 5780 or text LALIFE to 60999.
